Ari holds her newborn baby at the Alaska Native Medical Center. Days earlier, doctors had tried to induce Ari’s labor because of her preeclampsia symptoms. After the induction failed, doctors went ahead with an unplanned C-section. Lily Ann Schablein was born just after midnight on Jan. 5. She was 21 inches long and weighed 7 pounds, 14 ounces, a healthy weight. Carol spent three nights in the hospital at Ari’s side.
