SUMMARY:Health TIE Open Innovation - Moms Matter Now
DESCRIPTION:Although they are bombarded with information\, cute outfits\, and jokes about sleepless nights\, new mothers aren’t always prepared for matrescence\, or the physical\, emotional\, and social transition into motherhood\, a term first described by medical anthropologist Dana Raphael in 1973. Although wonderful and fulfilling\, motherhood can also be isolating\, stressful and full of conflicting emotions. Designed to provide education and support for this major transformation\, Alaska-based Moms Matter Now provides insights\, resources\, and a community for those going through this important life change.  \nDestigmatizes Mental Health Issues \nCo-founded in May 2020 by Calisa Kastning and Holly Brooks (pictured upper right) based on their professional and personal experiences\, Moms Matter Now destigmatizes mental health issues through normalizing taboo subjects\, providing evidence-based tools for behavior change\, and encouraging social support. Through dismissing or not normalizing the transition to motherhood\, many new mothers and their partners suffer needlessly or lack information about how to proactively make changes. \n  \nOne in Five New Moms Have a Diagnosable Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder \nResearch shows that one in five people who give birth will be affected with a diagnosable perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. Without treatment\, mothers and their offspring can face a lifetime of mental health challenges\, including substance misuse and attachment issues. Moms Matter Now provides a safe learning space while also including warning signs for serious conditions which may require professional intervention. \n  \nFunding for 250 Qualifying Alaskans \nMoms Matter Now is a new\, proactive loop in the safety net surrounding new mothers\, parents\, and their children and includes them in a supportive community while also helping them feel understood and\, if necessary\, helping them make adjustments. To share their message and programming\, Kastning and Brooks have recently received funding through the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority to provide Moms Matter Now to 250 qualifying Alaskans. As part of launching this initiative\, they’ll be seeking referrals and working with Alaskan healthcare and social professionals\, including OBGYNs\, therapists\, pediatricians\, and nonprofits over the next year to onboard referred clients. They encourage the Health TIE community to suggest potential contacts and partner organizations. \n  \nJoin Health TIE on March 23rd to learn about the Moms Matter Now startup journey as well as their future plans.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Implementing Community-Level Policies to Prevent Alcohol Misuse
DESCRIPTION:Webinar: Implementing Community-Level Policies to Prevent Alcohol Misuse\nThursday\, November 10\, 2022 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM ET\nJoin the PTTC Network and SAMHSA for an upcoming webinar highlighting findings from SAMHSA’s guide\, Implementing Community-Level Policies to Prevent Alcohol Misuse. The guide will focus on evidence-based\, community-level policies to prevent alcohol misuse among youth and adults by working to change or influence community conditions\, systems\, and behaviors.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Now\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEmail Networkoffice@pttcnetwork.org if you have any questions about this event! \nFull Description of Guide: \nAlcohol misuse is associated with a variety of harms\, including multiple health conditions\, crime\, violence\, and motor vehicle crashes\, and is responsible for approximately 140\,000 deaths per year in the United States. Approximately 70 percent of adults in the United States report drinking alcohol in the past year\, as do 30 percent of youth under the age of 21. As rates of alcohol use and related harms remain high\, communities would benefit from guidance on the most effective options to prevent and reduce alcohol misuse. This guide will focus on assisting communities to identify evidence-based policies to prevent alcohol misuse. Developed for policymakers\, health departments\, coalitions\, prevention practitioners\, communities\, and other stakeholders\, this guide will focus on evidence-based\, community-level policies to prevent alcohol misuse among youth and adults by working to change or influence community conditions\, systems\, and behaviors. It will provide an overview of effective prevention policies that can be implemented at the local\, state\, tribal\, and/or territorial levels and includes the available evidence supporting these policies and their implementation. It also includes key considerations and strategies for implementing and evaluating these policies while considering equity implications throughout. \nView other guides in this Series: \nAddressing Burnout in the Behavioral Health Workforce through Organizational Strategies \nAdapting Evidence-based Interventions for Under-resourced Populations: Recording & Slides

SUMMARY:Story Circle for Recovery Month!
DESCRIPTION:What is a Story Circle? A Story Circle is a small group of individuals sitting in a circle\, sharing stories from their own experience. \n\n\nAbout this virtual event\n\n\n\nAs each person in turn shares a story\, a richer and more complex story emerges. By the end\, people see both real differences and things their stories have in common. A Story Circle is a journey into its theme\, with multiple dimensions\, twists\, and turns. \nStory Circles are often understood as deriving from indigenous traditions. There are many variations. Story Circles can become practical interventions for building shared power and moving to action after hearing themes from the stories and building relationships between individuals. \nEach Story Circle is unique and can take on the energy of the group. They can support perspective taking\, empathy\, cultural humility\, listening\, courage\, vulnerability and healing. \nStory Circles can be light or deep – depending upon the hopes\, intentions\, and outcomes of your group. \nThis Circle will focus on stories of Recovery\, in honor of Recovery Month!

SUMMARY:Wellbeing Wednesdays: Ep. 8 - Alcohol Use Disorder
DESCRIPTION:Wellbeing Wednesdays \nAlcohol Use Disorder: Our Nation’s Hidden Epidemic \nWednesday\, September 28 | 2pm-3pm ET \n \n  \n  \nRecovery Month provides an opportunity to discuss our nation’s hidden epidemic – alcohol use disorder (AUD). Deaths involving AUD increased dramatically during the pandemic\, according to a study by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The study also found that young adults 25 to 44 years old experienced the steepest upward trend in AUD mortality. In a separate study\, researchers at Washington University in St. Louis found that problem drinking led to more than 232 million missed work days a year in the U.S. before the pandemic\, and the situation likely became worse with more people working at home. Dr. George F. Koob\, Director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism\, will join us for a discussion on AUD and the impact of AUD on people and families. \nJoin us for the eighth episode in our Wellbeing Wednesday virtual learning series on September 28\, where the best minds in health care share their thoughts on topical issues: \n•    George F. Koob\, PhD\,  Director\, National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) \n•    Chuck Ingoglia\, President and CEO of the National Council for Mental Wellbeing
