Health TIE Open Innovation – Moms Matter Now

March 23, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Although they are bombarded with information, cute outfits, and jokes about sleepless nights, new mothers aren’t always prepared for matrescence, or the physical, emotional, and social transition into motherhood, a term first described by medical anthropologist Dana Raphael in 1973. Although wonderful and fulfilling, motherhood can also be isolating, stressful and full of conflicting emotions. Designed to provide education and support for this major transformation, Alaska-based Moms Matter Now provides insights, resources, and a community for those going through this important life change.

Destigmatizes Mental Health Issues

Co-founded in May 2020 by Calisa Kastning and Holly Brooks (pictured upper right) based on their professional and personal experiences, Moms Matter Now destigmatizes mental health issues through normalizing taboo subjects, providing evidence-based tools for behavior change, and encouraging social support. Through dismissing or not normalizing the transition to motherhood, many new mothers and their partners suffer needlessly or lack information about how to proactively make changes.

One in Five New Moms Have a Diagnosable Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder

Research shows that one in five people who give birth will be affected with a diagnosable perinatal mood and anxiety disorder. Without treatment, mothers and their offspring can face a lifetime of mental health challenges, including substance misuse and attachment issues. Moms Matter Now provides a safe learning space while also including warning signs for serious conditions which may require professional intervention.

Funding for 250 Qualifying Alaskans

Moms Matter Now is a new, proactive loop in the safety net surrounding new mothers, parents, and their children and includes them in a supportive community while also helping them feel understood and, if necessary, helping them make adjustments. To share their message and programming, Kastning and Brooks have recently received funding through the Alaska Mental Health Trust Authority to provide Moms Matter Now to 250 qualifying Alaskans. As part of launching this initiative, they’ll be seeking referrals and working with Alaskan healthcare and social professionals, including OBGYNs, therapists, pediatricians, and nonprofits over the next year to onboard referred clients. They encourage the Health TIE community to suggest potential contacts and partner organizations.

Join Health TIE on March 23rd to learn about the Moms Matter Now startup journey as well as their future plans.
